Meow, sucker.
Hey, babes!
Remember to grab your free books for the month of May at the end!
A few of you (more than a few) emailed to ask about the cats I mentioned in my last newsletter. How did I happen to suddenly, “accidentally” acquire them?
Well, because I am a sucker.
Their names are Mothra and Mila. They were born somewhere around October of last year, and are a bonded pair. They’re feral-born cats who were trapped and brought indoors in a neighborhood about 30 miles from me, with the best of intentions. I couldn’t bear to leave them in the stressful situation they were in, so I impulsively, very foolishly decided to bring them to my home.
This last week we discovered that Mila… is pregnant. While the other kittens were able to be captured and spayed in time to prevent pregnancy, she was not.

They are slowly acclimating to the house, to the 60lb dog who wants to be their friend, and to life indoors. We’ve formed a bond, and though I’m not fond of having a litter box in my room, for the most part, they’ve integrated themselves into our lives easily.
For the time being they are most comfortable in my bedroom, though I have allowed them free access to the house for the last couple weeks. They have only willingly taken a few steps outside the bedroom, but will share floor space around my bed with the dog, provided she doesn’t try to hover too close.
They’ve grown very comfortable with me, and I recognize the unique blessing that comes with an animal’s trust and affection, even if they weren’t planned and I am not altogether sure what to do with them.
Meanwhile, I’m also reviewing the chapters I have completed of For Miles (10 of the planned 12). Macro-level creative work is coming very easily to me right now in spite of the burnout and exhaustion I’ve been wading through. I have a skeleton for a series bible outlined, and the zero draft of a prequel novel half finished. My brain is happy to supply ideas, scenes, the urge to sit down to the page. I’m confident that the flow will come.
XOXO,
Mariah
